Introduction

This course consists of different modules to update the students’ knowledge and understanding of anatomy and understanding of sound and hearing, the testing of hearing threshold levels. The identification of problems and when and how to refer a client and report concerns.

Legislation is discussed as this plays a major role in hearing conservation.

  • Basic anatomy and physiology of hearing
  • Background to Audiometry and Audiometry equipment.
  • Quality standards and control
  • Measuring hearing acuity
  • Types of hearing loss and classification of hearing impairment
  • Hearing conservation

The learner must complete all the assessments to complete the course and receive a certificate of attendance. The course is presented as an online course and 1 x pre-course and 1 x summative assessment, which has to be completed in 4 weeks from enrolment.

This course is targeted at all Health care and allied professionals who have completed the 3-day Audiometry course in audiometry testing in the occupational setting.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course/article candidates will have updated their knowledge and skills to be able to:

  • Prepare for an Audiometric Screening Test
  • Conduct an audiometric screening test on a patient
  • Interpret, evaluate, record and report the audiometric screening test results

Assessment

After completion of the knowledge section and attending the training sessions, the learner must complete the following:

  • Summative Theoretical Exam – Online multiple-choice questionnaire
  • And score 70% to pass, two assessments may be done as part of the course.
  • If a third must be done to achieve 70% a fee will have to be paid.
