Introduction

For many years modern psychiatrists, and before them the alienists, treated patients suffering from a horrible disease, called “paralysis of the insane,” in mental asylums. The disease first struck Europe in the late 15th century. It was called the “great pox.” It manifested with boils as big as acorns, spreading all over the body. These sores caused severe pain and eventually, death. People soon learned that the disease was sexually transmitted. The treatment for this disease was sometimes just as lethal as the illness itself, drinking or bathing in toxic amounts of mercury.
