This first edition of the Journal for 2021 contains four interesting and topical articles, the first on COVID-19, the second on community-acquired pneumonia in children, the third on preterm neonates and the last on an approach to urinary tract infections. The first article is by Professor Guy Richards from the University of the Witwatersrand, and he discusses the chronic manifestations of COVID-19, a highly important and topical subject. This condition is referred to as “long COVID”, the pathogenesis of which is unknown, and while no definitive therapies exist, Professor Richards does make some suggestions regarding possible strategies for prevention and treatment.
