Overuse injuries in sport by Prof Jon Patricios
Participation in exercise and the process of “getting fitter” is little more than a method of facilitating multi-system adaptation. The systems involved include, most importantly, the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems but also others such as the immune system, the significance of which has been highlighted during the COVID pandemic. As sports clinicians, it is most often injury to the musculoskeletal system that concerns us. Injury is lttle more than a failure of adaptation, and overuse or repeated overexposure of these tissues to the stress of exercise one of the most important causes.
Paediatric acute pain by Dr Jenna Leigh Taylor
Pain management in children is complex and, when achieved correctly, rewarding. It can be difficult to assess pain and its severity in children (particularly the young, those with intellectual impairment or comorbidities). Paediatric pain is subjective and influenced by psychological, social, situational and developmental factors. Whatever the cause, the appropriate recognition and management thereof is important to promote patient wellbeing and to prevent anxiety and the development of chronic pain. Neonates have an exaggerated pain response and the effects of mismanaged analgesia in this age group have far reaching consequences on acute and long term neurological and behavioural development. Anxiety is both a cause and effect of a greater pain experience.
