The Unthinkable – The Charlotte Crisis
Like rats leaving a sinking ship” was the description my colleague used when she related the difficulties and delays of driving out of the staff parking garage of the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, on Friday 16 April 2021.
Sailing Croatia - living the dream
After several sailing courses, off Durban mostly, and numerous examinations I started ocean racing on richer people’s yachts to gain sea experience. This part is uncomfortable and unnecessary for normal people who just want to have a good time relaxing in the sun. Yacht cruising is meant to be fun (keep saying that in your head - it helps) and ocean racing is sort of fun at times with plenty of shouting. Rather dip your toes in the water by going day-sailing with friends on a flat bit of water. Offshore Durban with its strong winds, large waves and accompanying seasickness is not that much fun and reluctant partners may be put off. When a novice boards a yacht they may initially be intimidated by the complexity of sails and ropes whereas an experienced sailor wonders at its extreme simplicity where every item has a well-defined purpose and is strong enough to withstand any weather. Not that this is needed if you stay with fairweather sailing and keep all happy on board always (see rule #1). But why does absolutely everything have a weird name on a yacht? Well I found out that when you are being screamed at in a gale it’s important to release the pinkspotted string and not the black-striped Sailing Croatia - living the dream Professor Trevor R Carmichael MBBCh (Wits) FC Ophth (SA) PhD (Med) Msc (Med) Emeritus Professor, Division of Ophthalmology, Department of Neurosciences, University of the Witwatersrand Associate Professor Terri Carmichael BSc (Hons), MM (HR), PhD Wits Business School, University of the Witwatersrand ropy one so having a common language helps.
